3 Ways to Declare War on Cavities

September 10, 2015 By Sara Fossum

Cavity.

Your mouth’s worst enemy. It’s the last word you want to hear when you go to the dentist. Not only can cavities lead to more serious oral ailments, but also treatment for cavities can be costly.

92% of all adults have at least one cavity by the age of 64. But just because cavities are common does not mean you’re in the clear, especially when cavities are preventable.

So how do you become one of the 8%? Suit up, practice your battle cry and step inline with these 3 tips:

1. Brush up your dental defense.

A basic dental routine is the first line of defense when you go to war with tooth decay. Brush and floss twice a day for at least two minutes. Your dentist also might recommend adding a mouth rinse.

Also enlist your dentist’s help. Make an appointment every 6 months to remove any plaque and check for early enemy signs of decay.

2. Put your cravings at ease.

Sugar is a cavity’s best ally. Eating foods high in sugar and starch form plaque-causing bacteria. Consume these foods in moderation and make sure to brush and floss after each meal.

If you’re battling with a sweet tooth, here are some great alternatives to help you scare away sugary opponents.

3. Seal any breaches.

Think sealants as reinforcement to your cavity-fighting army. Sealants are a thin, plastic shield placed on your tooth’s grooved surface to prevent bacteria from making a base camp.
